The South Lancs and Cheshire Metal Detecting Club is reputed to be one of the oldest and most successful in the UK. Founded in the autumn of 1978, by Brian Cross, it has grown steadily until today it is able to provide its membership with a wide range of benefits expected of a successful club. Club meetings are an essential part of club life, for here members are kept up-to-date on all facets of club life, including what is happening within the hobby nationally. Meetings start around 8pm and may finish sometimes after 11pm. At each meeting a newsletter is available at the entrance, which is compiled by Brian and Mo' and input from the members, is always forthcoming and welcome. Where ever possible the club will obtain fields from a farmer enabling all of us to enjoy a days detecting on a new site. Details of these rallies are given out solely during the club meetings. The rallies allow the less experienced members to detect alongside the more experienced thus helping them to become more successful with their machines.

Club Members On the Job?

Dave Owens, Jim Rawlings, Dave Hall and Mark Carlin try and detect from dawn till dusk whatever the weather.

Each month all the members are asked to bring along to the meeting, their best coins and finds, found since the last meeting, and submit them for entry to the four competitions held i.e. 'coin of the month' (pre and post 1662) & 'find of the month' (pre and post 1800). Votes are counted and small prizes are awarded each month. The points gained from these competitions decide who will become the detectors of the year. In addition to the competitions held each club meeting, there are also annual trophies awarded for the best 'coin' & 'find' discovered during the previous 12 months. These are judged and presented at the January meeting. From time to time, guest speakers are invited to talk to the club members on a wide variety of topics. In the past we have had Archaeologists, Bomb Disposal Officers, Manufacturers of metal detectors, Local historians, coin collectors etc, etc, etc.

This club has also achieved wide acclaim for its work done for a number of local-based charities. It has been recognised, that, for a relatively small group the sums raised have been quite phenomenal. Most members take part in some way in the various events staged by the club, realising that such work, firstly benefits those less fortunate than ourselves, and secondly, imprints the name of our club into the minds of the local community and that of the surrounding districts.
